Art Gallary

When I was walking through the Albright Knox the first painting to catch my attention and make me take a second look was the BOIS-TIGES DE FER. When you look at it straight on it you really see just a bunch of vertical lines. When you look at it at any angle you notice the hanging wire and it is really neat. I what I really like about it was that it is a few different paintings, or works of art in one.
The next painting that caught my eye was George Braque’s Guitar and Still Life on a mantel piece. It really caught my eye because of the guitar. I am a big fan of guitars. I feel it is unique because it looks like a collage but is a painting.
The next painting that caught my eye was Richard Anuszkiewicz’s Temple to Albers. When I was walking up the painting from the side it just looked like a bunch of rectangles, but when you look at it straight on it morphs. When you look at it for a little bit you see what looks like columns and a vanishing point in the middle. When I looked at the name of the painting it really suits it well. It does have a Neo classical feel to it although it is all done with rectangles and contrast.
Next painting was an untitled print from the Portfolio Heat Wave. It is screen print 138/170. Something just made me look at this painting for a long time. To me it just captures “America” this is what America has turned into. Most people in the population live in the suburbs. I really like how it uses space to show the cityscape in the background. All in all it is a really nice print.
Storm light by Ken Price is another print that caught my eye. I really like how the sky is blue and the water is black. This is different from what we are used to but because of the lightning it is probably closer to reality. The deep blues and blacks with the high contrast of the whites and light blues rally keep your eyes interested.
The Pacific Ocean is another one of the Ken Prices. This one just so happened to be next to the other one that caught my eye of Storm Light. This one really bold and shows what looks to be like a large wave in the dusk or dawn of the day. It is a very peaceful print but just as there is contrast between the water and the sky there is contrast between the peace and danger of the beautiful sunset or sunrise and the big ocean swell.

Probably my favorite painting of the night was on my way out of the gallery and the Divisibilité indéfinie by  Yves Tanguy catches my eye. This in another bold painting done in oil which seem to be the ones that I gravitate to. This one looks like it could be a Pixar movie to me. What it says to me is every things can be broken down into its granular pieces hence the name infinite divisibility.

LOGO

1.     Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.

The thought behind this is that the company that I am making this for is a hosting company. The E is also a server rack which is one of the services that the company provides, the M is and envelope which is another service that is provided. The P is the cloud which stands for the internet which is the concept behind the company. I didn't really have any colors to color this with but I could think of a few that might look good. I am going to work on this further.

2.     Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.

I really wanted the logo to be eye catching but also stand for something that the company does. I think that it does both of these.

3.     What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?

When sketching the log it is pretty amazing how I started out with something so simple and it transformed organically into what I wanted. I was surprised with the ease of this process.

4.     What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, PowerPoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

I really cannot believe the how important the logo is. I always knew without knowing. I didn't realize that I was thinking of the bow tie and automatically associating it with Chevy. Or the golden arches and McDonalds or the peacock with NBC. A strong logo can be the difference between making it and breaking it in the business. The videos really show the amount of time and development that goes into these things.

Value and Colors

The top is value done with a pencil. The bottom is the color wheel however it was not done with magenta, cyan and yellow. I didn't have cyan so I did my best to work around. it still got the point across that primary colors are the three mentioned above and the we were all lied to throughout school. I prefer using a pencil or charcoal it seems easier to me to work with and if i make something too dark i can use the eraser to lighten it up. I really couldn't believe that the real primary colors were not green red and blue.

Slideshow Thought

When doing the slideshow I found it pretty easy to find all of the elements and principles just because I had taken a lot of pictures of nature. Nature has all of these elements and principles built in and it is relatively easy to find them when you know what to look for.

Color and Feelings

Color always had an effect on me whether it was conscious or subconscious. After reading about color and watching the videos that were provided as well as my own research I realize that there is science behind it and there is proven emotional reaction with different colors.

What fascinates me about color is that it can subconsciously effect your feelings. Such as red may make you mad or hungry just as green or blue may make you calm and peaceful. To me that is really neat. When they say that a lot of restaurants paint red in them to promote hunger I thought that it was really something.

I like that when they were talking about the bolder the colors the more intense the emotions. That stuck out to me. When you see a very vivid painting with intense and bold hues and sharp contrast it evokes more reaction and make you feeling the painting.

When learning about the Goya paintings it is pretty obvious when he is painting something that is a dark emotion such as despair he chooses very dark and intense colors. It seems to be a pretty common theme through most art. Bright and colorful pictures are generally more upbeat emotions whereas darker ones are more somber.

Module Two - Blog: Video and CNN Article Review

Philosophy of the arts.
-this video shows the evolution of what art was thought of in society and how the very thought of art itself changed throughout time.
Important people that I noticed in the film were
Kant 18th century I believe was important because he believed that art was subjective and that it was not objective. He thought that beauty is in the eye of the beholder
John Dewey 1934s suggested that aesthetics is linked completely to society as a whole helps to make the life of the people.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jean-Pierre Changeux
Works of art = artifacts  human productions specialized for inter-subjective communication that user symbolic forms genetically and epigenetically encoded.
Art is distinct from language nonverbal communication of emotional states, knowledge, experience.
Vilayanur Ramachandran
Art transcends culture. Art is very different because vision is a very complicated process and there are ways of people process information which causes it to become subjective. Although the artist may have an idea in mind when he/she makes their piece of art, another person may see something completely different. Without this phenomena there would be no art.

Laws of aesthetics
Grouping or binding- the brain force you to be drawn to grouping causing the brain to try and create something from these groups. It taps into a basic part of the brain to defeat camouflage.
Peak shift principal- it is when you take something common among us and exaggerate it. For example if you take the red spot on the end of the mother bird’s beak which lets the chicks know that it is time for food and exaggerate it the chicks get even more excited.
Isolating a single cue to optimally excite cortical visual areas (“Attention”) - taking the minimalist approach to be will bring attention to what you’re trying to bring attention to.
Perceptual ‘problem solving’- the act of searching for meaning is better than when you don’t have to. This taps into a primal instinct of when we were chasing for food it would excite our senses and cause more reward when completed.
Symmetry- symmetry is very basic instinct that tells our brain to arouse the senses because something is there and it needs to be determined if it is good or bad. Evaluation artist exploit this now because symmetry draws people in because the brain connections are already there. That being said there is also the advantage of having non symmetrical pieces of art. This causes people to expect there to be symmetry and when there isn’t it sticks out.

CNN Article
The article was informative in that I shows the actual science behind something that seems somewhat simple to me. I didn't realize that just looking at something causes this chain reaction of events to happen in my head. After reading it makes complete sense to me now. For instance I realize why when I look at a picture that obviously has lines around the objects to define them still makes me think of something as realistic looking. If you like science which I do this article is very informative.
Article/Videos and Book
These videos and article help support the book and its information. To be honest I watched the videos and read the article first before reading the book and it help change the way I was looking at the pictures or panting or sculptures. I found myself asking question like, why was there no symmetry in this painting? Well it could have been that the artist wanted to draw attention to a particular part of the work and knew from the way he felt (but maybe not been able to scientifically prove it) that it made him focus on this particular part for that reason. I am a person who favors science and have a logical brain, I like to know that there is a reason for someone doing something and not just because. I want to break it down into the granular parts and figure out if it was just because then why was it just because. Some of the philosophers help me with this realizing that society has a direct effect on the art of the time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The one thing that stuck out to me more than any other statement.
Art is distinct from language = nonverbal communication of emotional states, knowledge, experience. – Jean-Pierre Changeux

This made me think. It was interesting to think of it that way. I mean it is an obvious statement really but I never thought about it in that perspective. To me it is awesome that we can look at something that was created in a foreign land at an ancient time and know what people were thinking. This piggybacks on the theory that emotions are universal and it is a pretty cool concept.
